Purepecha Embroidery

In the state of Michoacan close to the lake of Patzcuaro is Santa Clara Tzintzuntzan. In 1989, seeking innovation at the Michoacán House of Handicrafts, they were encouraged to create a new design that showcased their customs. Thus, the women who formed the cooperative initially considered embroidering the “Danza de los viejitos” Dance of the Old Men, so that the traditions would not be lost, but rather presented through embroidered stories. Upon seeing the work they were doing, they began inviting them to participate in the Artisan Market held in Pátzcuaro, on the occasion of the Day of the Dead, and in this way they began to receive orders for bedspreads, embroidery, dresses, tablecloths, cushions and shawls. Several cooperatives, represents this beautiful work, such as Colibries and Vasco de Quiroga.
