These gorgeous threads are truly a tale of masterful textile processes. They were hand-dyed in Japan using  kakishibu. Kakishibu or "persimmon tannin" is created from unripe persimmon astringent that has been fermented and aged. The resulting thread has beautiful, natural tan, brown and reddish tones. Aside from being a gorgeous dyeing pigment, the dye has a variety of other benefits. It is a naturalinsect deterrent and prevents mold from forming on dyed fabrics. Fishing nets, stencil paper and sakebukuro are often dyed with kakishibu due to these reasons. They can be used for sashiko, boro projects, embroidery or hand sewing.
