Pennsylvania Dutch Quilted Ball

“Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without.” This timeless Pennsylvania Dutch saying captures the simple, resourceful spirit at the heart of this workshop—and the values that shaped our teacher, Hannah Straubel’s upbringing.

We’ll begin by exploring the history and traditions of Pennsylvania Dutch textile folk art, looking at how crafting has long been a way to live in rhythm with the seasons, stay connected to the land, and pass down knowledge and wisdom through generations.

We will create a no-sew quilted ornament using fabric scraps—a beginner-friendly, meditative project that’s as beautiful as it is practical. We’ll examine historical quilted ornaments passed down through Hannah’s family as examples of this enduring folk tradition, and explore creative ways to build on the foundational techniques introduced in class.
