This book introduces the traditional stripe and lattice patterns of Japan and also tells the story of these simple handwoven fabrics during the Edo period and the Meiji and the Taisho (1913-26) periods, during which they reached the climax of their popularity. The purpose of this book is to reproduce the sample books of earlier times. In other words, this is a modern version of the SHIMA and KOSHI HIKAECHO, reproducing the traditional patterns of Japan. The book is purposefully designed pictorially, without an elaborate theoretical text or lengthy essays, hoping that it may help the reader to achieve a better understanding of the history of traditional patterns and the laborious work of the authors' ancestors in producing these fabrics that were originally imported from foreign lands. It is also the authors' hope that the patterns shown in this book will have some influence on the modern patters of today and tomorrow.
