Callejero Embroidery

Mexico City is a city shaped by its streets, markets, shared meals, and the everyday gestures that bring people together. In this class, Mexican artist and author Gimena Romero introduces bordado callejero, exploring the cultural traditions, stories, and spirit of community that inform Mexican embroidery. Through storytelling, imagery, and historical context, participants will encounter the cultural and emotional landscape from which these stitches emerge.

Students will learn a family of intricate stitches rooted in traditional Mexican embroidery, exploring their rhythm, structure, movement, and expressive possibilities. These techniques will be applied to an everyday cloth inspired by the chiquihuite, a textile used to cover, protect, and keep food warm. Textiles have long accompanied the rituals of food preparation and sharing in Mexico, from wrapping tortillas and covering bread to bringing food to the center of the table. Through embroidery, these simple objects become expressions of nourishment, hospitality, and care.

Combining traditional techniques with color and personal expression, participants will begin creating their own embroidered cloth while exploring the relationship between textiles, food, and community. The class offers an opportunity to experience embroidery not simply as a technique, but as a way of looking, remembering, and preserving cultural histories through the objects that shape everyday life.
