Pennsylvania Dutch Quilted Ball: Hand Sewn Quilting Series IV

This class is part of the five-part virtual Hand Sewn Quilting Series IV. Classes may be purchased individually at $75 or as a five-part package for a discounted price of $350.

“Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without.” This timeless Pennsylvania Dutch saying captures the simple, resourceful spirit at the heart of this workshop—and the values that shaped our teacher, Hannah Straubel’s upbringing.

We’ll begin by exploring the history and traditions of Pennsylvania Dutch textile folk art, looking at how crafting has long been a way to live in rhythm with the seasons, stay connected to the land, and pass down knowledge and wisdom through generations.

In this 2.5 hour class, we will create a no-sew quilted ornament using fabric scraps—a beginner-friendly, meditative project that’s as beautiful as it is practical. We'll examine historical quilted ornaments passed down through Hannah’s family as examples of this enduring folk tradition, and explore creative ways to build on the foundational techniques introduced in class.

Our Teacher

Hannah Straubel is a Waldorf teacher and Brooklyn-based textile artist. Passionate about social justice, geopolitics, and the intersections of art and activism, she loves learning alongside small communities as they navigate cultural preservation and evolution in a globalizing world.

This summer, Hannah spent time in München learning the ins and outs of dirndl design and construction, and backpacking in northern Italy. She’s been taking PA Dutch language classes with her mom to connect more deeply with her ancestors and engage with the revitalization work of this endangered language.

When not teaching, Hannah’s usually starting in on a new project, deep-diving into a rabbit hole of history and regional art, or weeding in her community garden plot.
