Hawaiian quilting is a distinctive island tradition, known for its flowing, symmetrical patterns and signature “echo” quilting lines that radiate throughout the design. In this introductory workshop, participants will learn foundational Hawaiian quilting techniques while exploring the craft’s deep roots in Hawaiian history and cultural expression.

Students will learn all the necessary skills to create an 18″ x 18″ piece, suitable for a pillow or wall hanging. The class will cover the first stages of the process, including needle-turn appliqué to attach the pattern fabric to the background, followed by an introduction to hand quilting.

Hawaiian quilting is entirely hand-stitched, requiring time, focus, and care. This intentional process allows each quilter to infuse their work with personal meaning, sharing their spirit (“mana”) and sense of aloha, whether creating something for their own home or as a meaningful gift for someone else.

Recording

All Hand Sewn Quilting Series sessions will be recorded. A link to each recording will be emailed to all registrants following the live session. Each link is live for three months after the live session.

Class Materials: 

• 2 pieces of 20″x20″ fabric for the pattern and the background. 100% cotton preferred
• 1 piece of 20″x20″ batting. Polyester low loft, cotton, or any preferred by student
  1 piece of 20″x20″ backing fabric…can be cotton or muslin
• Appliqué needle (Pat uses a straw needle #11 size)
• Quilting needle (Pat uses John James #10 size, or Clover Black Gold)
• Appliqué thread in same color as pattern fabric
• Quilting thread in colors of pattern and background (Pat uses Gutterman or Dual Duty)
• Quilting hoop (Pat uses a 14″ wooden hoop)
• Sharp scissors
• Pins
• Optional: Thimble and rubber finger tips like those used by bank tellers

Under the guidance of contemporary textile artists, participants of all levels will engage with various quilting techniques. Beginners will gain confidence and a deeper understanding of quilting foundations, while experienced makers will expand their skills and textile knowledge beyond the basics.
