ABOUT LOUISIANA REVUE – SONIA DELAUNAY

This catalog shows the range of Delaunay's work as it unfolded over 60 years, from the 1910s to the 1970s – from abstract paintings and works on paper to textile design, garments, fashion photography, books and carpets, even a brightly colored sports car.

Working across art and design, the Russian-French artist Sonia Delaunay (1885-1979) pushed abstract art far beyond the frame of painting. Migrating from St. Petersburg to the art metropolis of Paris, she soon became active on the European avant-garde scene. Alongside her husband, the French painter Robert Delaunay, she was a pioneer of abstract art in the early 1910s.

Dynamic color interaction is at the core of all her work, whether in painting, book illustration or costume and textile design. Breaking with the figurative vocabulary that subordinates color to subject matter, she lets color work on its own power in evocative, dynamic compositions.

As a textile and fashion designer, Delaunay helped "compose" the new, modern woman that she herself embodied. She created an original role for the artist combining avant-garde, creative entrepreneur and businesswoman.
